Calibration du recrutement par plusieurs indices d'abondance. Maximum de vraisemblance. Incorporation d'une distribution a priori ArchiMer
Laurec, A.; Souplet, Arnauld.
Following HARDING (1984-) maximum likelihood techniques are used to estimate recruitment through abundance indices. The first new point in this paper corresponds to the possible use of the historical average recruitment as a shrinkage pole. Under specific assumptions this can lead to the usual regression line where on past data recruitment is explained by the abundance index (e.g. I.Y.F.S.). The second point is related to the possibility of taking into account several abundance indices, corresponding for example to several fleets or research vessels. A maximum likelihood multicalibration technique is suggested. It corresponds to a software which has been implemented in ICES head quarter. Previous comparisons (Method Working Group, 1987) suggests that on...

Combining indicator trends to assess ongoing changes in exploited fish communities: diagnostic of communities off the coasts of France ArchiMer
Rochet, Marie-joelle; Trenkel, Verena; Bellail, Robert; Coppin, Franck; Le Pape, Olivier; Mahe, Jean-claude; Morin, Jocelyne; Poulard, Jean-charles; Schlaich, Ivan; Souplet, Arnauld; Verin, Yves; Bertrand, Jacques.
We present a method for combining individual indicator results into a comprehensive diagnostic of fishing impacts on fish populations and communities. A conceptual framework for interpreting combined trends in a set of simple indicators is proposed, relying beforehand on qualitative expectations anchored in ecological theory. The initial state of the community is first assessed using published information. Which combinations of trends are acceptable or undesirable is decided, depending on the initial status. The indicators are then calculated from a time-series and their time trends are estimated as the slopes of linear models. Finally, the test results are combined within the predefined framework, providing a diagnostic on the dynamics of fishing impacts...

Contribution à l'étude écologique d'un estran rocheux (Paluel, Seine - Maritime) ArchiMer
Souplet, Arnauld.

Souplet, Arnauld; Dufour, Jean-louis.
We describe here an improvement of the Lowestoft's method of otoliths readin. This new method is also based on thin sections of otoliths set in black resin, but it allows to prepare a very much greater quantity of otoliths in the same time (between 800 and 1000 otoliths of gadoid fish per day). In the same way, we can now read otoliths very quickly with a great precision and in very good working conditions. [NOT CONTROLLED OCR]

The ecosystems exploited by fishing are complex. The species which are sought after and their distribution rely on numerous processes, in time and space. The understanding of marine ecosystems requires important means and diverse information including those of professional fishing and scientific cruises. At first, scientific fishing cruises aimed to explore marine fauna and discover new halieutic resources. They were in line with the exploration cruises carried out by Prince Albert 1st of Monaco at the end of the XIXth century. However, since the beginning of the 1970s, they have been focusing on the quantification of the resources exploited by fishing. [...] After a series of "Understanding keys" aimed at helping the reader understand the methodology and...

Large spatial scale variation of demersal fish assemblage structure on the continental shelf of the NW Mediterranean Sea ArchiMer
Gaertner, J; Bertrand, Jacques; De Sola, L; Durbec, J; Ferrandis, E; Souplet, Arnauld.
The spatial structure of demersal fish assemblages on the continental shelf of the NW Mediterranean Sea was examined on a large scale between the Straits of Gibraltar and the Gulf of Lions. In contrast to its predominant role in the spatial distribution of species composition, described worldwide, it seems depth has only a limited effect on the distribution patterns of the total abundance and diversity of demersal fishes. In addition, evidence is provided for the division of the whole study area into 3 geographical fish assemblages. The influence of Atlantic inputs and the semi-permanent Almena-Oran hydrographic front play a key role in defining the Alboran Sea as a specific fish fauna area. Moreover, the clear differentiation between 2 distinct...

Since about twenty years, Ifremer have carried out fishery surveys along the French coasts. A dynamic indicator-based approach to the assessment of multi-stock fisheries has been applied to these data series. Reference points for non-commercial populations and community indicators are seldom available, but reference directions are well established: it is known whether fishing will increase or decrease the indicator, hence the direction that should be avoided. A set of simple indicators of fishing impacts on fish populations and communities were estimated from time-series data provided by scientific surveys (population abundance and average length, community total biomass and number, average length and weight, and size spectrum). Trends in these indicators...

Poissons et invertébrés au large des côtes de France : Indicateurs issus des pêches scientifiques. Bilan 2002 ArchiMer

The scientist community, the fishing organisations and all involved parties show a growing interest in an integrated project management of the sea space exploited by fishing communities. A key to reach such a target is to make available reliable and precise scientist data on the different components of the fishing systems. For about twenty years, and in its mission to support the development of an integrated management for a sustainable use of marine resources, Ifremer has been organising monitoring campaigns of fishery resources along the shores of France. These campaigns aim at providing abundance indicator on species of interest. They consequently provide an essential knowledge base to characterize and trace the status of exploited fish and...

The integration of fishing management into the ecosystemic approach has been recommended for many years by international consultative bodies; it is also written into international conventions and agreements. The implementation of the ecosystemic approach involves the development of programmes for monitoring exploited ecosystems in order to measure the effects of management steps. Plotting the results of these observations for operational reasons requires formalizing summary performance indicators. IFREMER has carried out halieutic observation campaigns for some twenty years along the coasts of France from oceanographic ships and chartered ships. The objective of these campaigns is to produce abundance indices of species that are of halieutic interest....

Spatial pattern in species richness of demersal fish assemblages on the continental shelf of the northern Mediterranean Sea: a multiscale analysis ArchiMer
Gaertner, J; Bertrand, Jacques; Relini, G; Papaconstantinou, C; Mazouni, N; De Sola, L; Durbec, J; Jukic Peladic, S; Souplet, Arnauld.
The species richness pattern of groundfish species in the entire northern Mediterranean Sea was examined at 3 spatial scales: region, large biogeographical zone and basin. We analysed 1914 trawl hauls collected using a single sampling design in the trawlable areas of the continental shelves between the Strait of Gibraltar and the Strait of Dardanelles (from 36.3 to 45.7 degrees N and 5.3 degrees W to 28 E). Spatial pattern in species diversity was assessed using complementary methods (Chao2 estimates of total species richness, mean species richness and beta diversity). No matter which scale was used, the expected longitudinally decreasing trend in species richness, which has been widely described in previous studies, did not appear when comparing estimates...

Spatio-temporal organization patterns of demersal assemblages of the east coast of Corsica (Mediterranean Sea) ArchiMer
Gaertner, Jean-claude; Bertrand, Jacques; Samani, D; Souplet, Arnauld.
The paper deals with the spatio-temporal organization patterns demersal assemblages along the east coast of Corsica. We analysed data collected by the first standardized experimental bottom trawl surveys performed in this region from 1994 to 1999 (MEDITS programme). The use of a multiway table method (STATIS-CoA) showed that the spatial organization pattern of the demersal assemblages of eastern Corsica was highly stable during the period studied. This pattern was structured around three bathymetric areas (i) the continental shelf (between 50 to 200 m depth), (ii) the upper slope (from 200 to 500 m) and (iii) the deeper slope (from 500 to 800 m), but it did not show any heterogeneity in relation with latitude. Along the cast coast of Corsica-characterized...

Spatio-temporal variation in diet may affect condition and abundance of juvenile European hake in the Gulf of Lions (NW Mediterranean) ArchiMer
Ferraton, Franck; Harmelin Vivien, Mireille; Mellon-duval, Capucine; Souplet, Arnauld.
Variations in space and time of juvenile hake diet (5 to 19 cm total length, TL) were investigated in the Gulf of Lions (NW Mediterranean) and related to variation in C and N stable isotope ratios, condition and abundance. Crustaceans (mysids and euphausiids) dominated the diet of the smallest juvenile hake (5 to 9 cm. TL), and fishes (sardines and anchovies) of the largest juveniles (15 to 19 cm TL). The transition from a crustacean- to a fish-based diet occurred in medium-sized juveniles (10 to 14 cm TL), which preyed on both crustaceans and fishes (gobiids). These juveniles preyed on fishes when living in shallow waters (30 to 50 m), and crustaceans when located in deep waters (70 to 150 m). Although hake diet did not change over time in shallow waters...

The dragonet Callionymus lyra, a target species used for evaluation of biological effects of chemical contaminants on French coasts ArchiMer
Burgeot, Thierry; Bocquene, Gilles; Truquet, Philippe; Le Dean, Loic; Poulard, Jean-charles; Dorel, Didier; Souplet, Arnauld; Galgani, Francois.
An oceanographic cruise in 1991 along the English Channel and Atlantic coasts of France indicated the value of dragonet Callionymus lyra Linnaeus, 1758 as a target species for monitoring biological effects. Ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase measurements in this species provided a first assessment of the effects of hydrocarbons (PCB, PAH, dioxins) on the marine environment. The specific behavior of dragonet was defined by biochemical characterization. Biological data were obtained during 3 additional oceanographic cruises to study changes in the abundance and distribution of the species in the English Channel and the Bay of Biscay. This first assessment, carried out in the context of the National Observation Network, indicated that pollutants do not have...

Trophic structure in the Gulf of Lions marine ecosystem (north-western Mediterranean Sea) and fishing impacts ArchiMer
Banaru, Daniela; Mellon, Capucine; Roos, David; Bigot, Jean-louis; Souplet, Arnauld; Jadaud, Angelique; Beaubrun, P.; Fromentin, Jean-marc.
The Gulf of Lions ecosystemwas described using the Ecopath mass-balancemodel to characterise its structure and functioning and to examine the effects of themultispecific fisheries operating in this area. The model is composed of 40 compartments, including 1 group of seabirds, 2 groups of etaceans, 18 groups of fish, 12 groups of invertebrates, 5 groups of primary producers, detritus and discards. Input datawere based on several recurrent scientific surveys, two alternative datasets for fishing data, stock assessment outputs, stomach content analyses and published information. Results showed that the functional groups were organised into five trophic levels with the highest one represented by dolphins, anglerfish, Atlantic bluefin tuna, European hake and...
